September, month of celebrations in Catalonia
September is a month of celebration for Barcelona and Catalonia. It is the month in which takes place the day of Catalonia (Diada Nacional de Catalunya) and La Mercè (Barcelona patron). The streets are filled with flags and Catalan symbols. These are holidays that Catalonia becomes pretty and shows the world their traditions and customs.
11 September Diada de Catalunya
Next day 11 September, Diada de l'onze de Setembre, in catalan, is celebrated the national day of Catalonia. A day in which the catalan people out on the street en masse, to commemorate the fall of Barcelona to the Bourbon troops. And that day has become a day of vindication of the catalan people.
Where does the celebration of September 11 in Catalonia?
We have to go back to the year 1700 in order to understand the meaning of this celebration. That year, Carlos II died 'The Bewitched', representative of the House of Austria in Spain, and he did it without leaving offspring. This provoked the dispute of the throne, in what became known as the war of the Spanish succession between the Habsburgs and the Bourbons.
In Barcelona, the defending austracists, were subjected to a site of fourteen months, until the city fell 11 September 1714 at the hands of the Bourbon troops.
In 1980 the Catalunana Parliament, declared on 11 September, Fiesta Nacional Catalana.
The Mercè 2015
On the night of 24 September 1218, you legend has it that the Virgin of Mercè, appeared the same night, the King Jaime I, San Pedro Nolasco and St. Ramón de Penyafort. You are asked to create an order of monks to save Christians imprisoned by the Saracens.
Centuries later, the city of Barcelona suffered a plague of locusts, and this was entrusted to the Virgen de la Mercè. Locust disappeared and the city attributed it to the prayers that were made to the Virgin Mary. This prompted the City Council to appoint patron of Barcelona to the Virgen de la Mercé.
Currently, the fiestas de La Mercè 2015, serve to show the world the traditions more rooted in Catalonia, as well as their customs, local products and regions.
This year, the Festival of La Mercè 2015 have been advanced to September 18. This change has become so do not coincide with the elections to the Parliament on September 27.
